The colloquium is specifically designed to foster the exchange of ideas in an informal manner, which is a key characteristic that distinguishes it from other session types. In a colloquium, participants typically gather to discuss topics of mutual interest in a less structured format. This approach allows for open dialogue, sharing of thoughts, and collaborative discussion among attendees, encouraging a dynamic flow of ideas and perspectives.

In contrast, a keynote session generally focuses on a prominent speaker delivering a structured presentation, aiming to inspire or inform the audience rather than facilitate an ongoing conversation among participants. Workshops usually involve more hands-on or practical learning experiences, often guided by a facilitator, where the focus is on skill development rather than open idea exchange. An interview session tends to follow a more formal structure, where one person interviews another, limiting the interactive and informal exchange that typifies a colloquium.
